課程概述

Developed by the University of Southern California, USC, this course is co-sponsored by the iPodia Alliance chain of world-renowned universities. This course is also currently part of the DS 3000 thematic series of the School of Innovative Design and will feature lectures and discussions, cross-cultural activities, innovation team work, and the construction of a global community. Step by step, students learn from each other across cultures and fields through the following five parts and breakout sessions to inspire active learning and innovative technologies.

PART I: Introduction of Technology Innovation and Market Competition
PART II: Technology Innovation in the Early Market (Demand and Function Competition)
PART III: Technology Innovation in the Mainstream Market (Performance and Price Competition)
PART IV: Technology Innovation in the Late Market (Price-Only Competition)
PART V: Emerging Innovation Paradigms (Escape the Mass Production Curse)

There are 12 universities participating in the Fall 2021 course:

7. Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) – Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
8. Peking University (PKU) – Beijing, China
9. National Taiwan University (NTU) – Taipei, Taiwan
10. Shanghai Jiao-Tong University (SJTU) – Shanghai, China
11. Korea Advance Inst. of Science and Technology (KAIST) – Daejeon, South Korea

NTU syncs sessions with USC, UFRGS, PKU, SJTU, and UMAN.
Note: Due to the different semester starting dates of USC and NTU, NTU students need to watch the videos of the the first three classes on their own to catch up with up the progress.

課程目標

This course will allow students to take the initiative to use what they have learned to develop innovative ideas in the classroom, and through cultural communication of diversity and discussion and cooperation with students in foreign schools, more able to stimulate their innovative thinking. Teaming up with cross-border teams to develop and complete tasks gives students the opportunity to experience the challenges of working with international teams and develop innovative ideas.

There are six major learning objectives of this iPodia course:

1. Content Study: To learn the key concepts and principles that govern the dynamic socio-technical interactions between technology innovation and market competition
2. Context Development: To co-create contextual knowledge and broad perspectives with global peers who bring in diverse viewpoints to enhance the understandings of global innovation
3. Cultural Awareness: To apply transcultural insights and competences to effectively collaborate with global peers from other cultural and social backgrounds
4. Hands-On Practice: To gain practical experiences of working with geographically distributed global virtual teams to accomplish projects that meet specific deliverable requirements
5. Networking Skill: To develop close personal and professional connections and communal bonds with peers of international and interdisciplinary backgrounds
6. On-Site Experience To experience face-to-face interaction with global classmates to further strengthen the learning experiences and outcomes of remote virtual interactions 

課程要求

The course requires fluent English capability. Also, It is necessary for the students to have self-reading, and group discussions or team exercises after the class. The case study or the project assigned in the class should be prepared and organized after the class.

Note: Students are required to participate in 12/1 (Sat) D-Day activities to demonstrate the results of the course.

This course is recommended for juniors or more, and special circumstances are welcome to be discussed.If necessary, an interview in English for the students who want to select the class will be arranged.

English proficiency requirements: Those who have taken and passed the advanced English course of the school, or who meet one of the following criteria:
(1) Pass the first test of GEPT high-intermediate level
(2) TOEFL 550 points or more
(3) TOEFL-iBT 79 points or more.
(4) IELTS Level 6 or above.
(5) FLPT 70 points or more.
(6) FCE B2 level or above.
(7) To obtain a degree from the National University of
English-speaking country, which is included in the reference register of the Ministry of Education.
